Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month, what a great time for us to celebrate the awesomeness of girls! As a parent or teacher, it is important to remember that it is not necessary to call out to the boys in your life that “hey we’re about to read about girls” as these books and characters stand on their own for all to enjoy. There are so many iconic girls in classic children’s literature, including Nancy Drew, Ramona Quimby, Harriet the Spy and Ms. Frizzle, just to name a few.

Below are a few of what are sure to be new classics in children’s literature, several of which are featured in the current BOOK IT! Give Me 20 Challenge which is centered on the theme “Inspiring and Empowering Women”.

From time to time I will share with you a new book I have read that I absolutely love and hope you will share with your kids. Don’t let the picture book format of this charming read fool you, this is the perfect message for the special girl in your life no matter her age. Dear Girl, A celebration of wonderful, smart, beautiful you! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Paris Rosenthal, illustrated by Holly Hatam features empowering messages, including my favorite “Dear Girl, Make your room awesome. Make your room you. And while you’re at it, make your bed!”
