Learning the alphabet is a basic reading-readiness skill.  Children must learn to recognize and name the letters and then eventually become able to hear and distinguish between the different sounds made by the letters.  Being aware of the letters and their shapes and recognizing the letter sounds, especially initial sounds, is a necessary foundation and part of the preparation for more formal reading instruction.
